Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu has been nominated for the Director's Guild Awards for his work on "Birdman."

According to Fox News Latino, the director will go against Wes Anderson ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"), Clint Eastwood ("American Sniper"), Richard Linklater ("Boyhood"), and Morten Tyldum ("The Imitation Game") in the Outstanding Directorial Achievement award. The winner will be chosen by no other than the filmmakers' peers.

"In a year full of excellent films, DGA members have nominated a stellar group of passionate filmmakers," DGA President Paris Barclay said, as quoted by Fox News Latino. "Inspiring and artistic, these five directors made films that left an indelible impact not only on their fellow directors and members of the director's team, but on audiences around the world."

This is Iñarritu's second nomination for the DGA's Feature Film Award; the first one being for "Babel" back in 2007. The director also won the Best Primetime Commercial Emmy in 2013 for "Best Job," a TV advertisement for Procter & Gamble, the news outlet reports.

On the other hand, this is the first DGA nomination for Linklater, Anderson, and Tyldum, and the fourth time for Eastwood, USA Today reports. The latter previously won in 1992's "Unforgiven," 2004's "Million Dollar Baby," 2003's "Mystic River," and for the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.

Tyldum expressed his excitement for the nomination. In a statement, cited by USA Today, the filmmaker said, "Couldn't be more excited to be recognized by my peers. I am thrilled that my fellow directors gave me this honor and to be in this group of talented artists is overwhelming. I am truly over the moon."

DGA snubs

Surprisingly, Ava DuVernay ("Selma"), David Fincher ("Gone Girl"), Angelina Jolie ("Unbroken"), and Christopher Nolan ("Interstellar") were not nominated this year, but according to USA Today, they might have a chance to get the Best Director honor at the Oscars. The official list of Oscar nominations will be announced on January 15.

"Only five times in the past 66 years have (Directors Guild noms) exactly matched up on the best-director Oscar nominations," said Scott Feinberg, The Hollywood Reporter's awards columnist, as quoted by USA Today. "It doesn't mean it's over for anyone."

The 67th Directors Guild of America Awards will be held at the Los Angeles Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on February 7. The event will be hosted by Jane Lynch.
