Chloe Moretz is being eyed to play young Jean Grey in the 2016 movie "X-Men: Apocalypse."

Aside from Moretz, Elle Fanning and Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld are also being considered for the role of the telepathic superhero. According to The Wrap, Bryan Singer - the director behind the "X-Men" movies - has had meetings with the young actresses in recent weeks.

Moretz has already starred in a movie based on a comic book; she played Hit Girl in the "Kick-Ass" movie, Telegraph reported. On the other hand, Fanning previously starred in Disney's "Maleficent" and has an upcoming film titled "Three Generations" while Steinfeld had an Oscar nomination for "True Grit" in 2011 and will soon appear in "Pitch Perfect 2."

"What's clear at this point is that Singer is aiming high for the role of young Jean Grey, while the director seems more open to casting a fresh face as Cyclops," The Wrap noted. New actors Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe, and "Interstellar" actor Timothee Chalamet are being eyed for the role of Jean Grey's romantic interest. Cyclops and Jean Grey have both existed in the popular comics since its debut in the 1960s, and are "often considered the emotional center of the 'X-Men' universe."

This would be the third time that Jean Grey will be brought to life on the big screen. The Wrap recalled that the character was previously portrayed by Famke Janssen in five "X-Men" movies, while Haley Ramm played the character in "X-Men: The Last Stand." The character is expected to recur in future "X-Men" movies. "Cyclops, aka Scott Summers, has been portrayed by James Marsden in four films and by Tim Pocock in 'X-Men: Origins: Wolverine'," The Wrap added.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" is rumored to be set in the 1980s, that's why Singer is casting younger versions of the roles, iDigitalTimes noted.

Producer Simon Kinberg has stated that the upcoming installment will take the hit movie franchise in a new direction. Furthermore, the film "will highlight Magneto's romance with Mystique, putting stars Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence front and center, which is right where Fox -- and audiences -- want them," according to The Wrap.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will start filming in the spring, The Wrap further reported. It is slated to be released in theaters on May 27, 2016.

In the meantime, relive the action of the latest "X-Men" movie "Days of Future Past" below.
